Dear readers,Â
This is a one-off special dispatch to mark several milestones that have uncannily coalesced. (Something to do with moon activity, maybe?)
It's Reading the City’s one-year anniversary!Â
A year ago today, I looked at the note on my phone where I kept a running list of book events I wanted to check out, and wondered if other people might find it useful, too. Turns out you did!Â
Through writing this newsletter, I’ve found out about so many books and authors, made new friends (hi!), and discovered reading series across the city, each galvanizing their own micro communities and hosting some wildly cool and unexpected events. I really hope you’ve had similar experiences, too.
One week until Amphibian officially launches!
My debut novel is out next week! Thank you to everyone who has preordered the book, reached out with offers of help, and generally spread the word. Your support is so deeply appreciated. Â
I’d love to see you all at my book launch on October 30th at Books Are Magic (it’s also my birthday, so add that to the list of things coalescing). Please do come say hi if you’re able to attend!
A decade in New York!Â
Exactly 10 years ago (see photo evidence below), I flew over from England—and I decided there and then that if I wanted to write books, this is where I had to be.Â
I had just three friends in the city. Not one of them was an author.Â
Which makes it all the more amazing to look back now at that moment. Suffice to say, thank you for reading, subscribing, and sharing this newsletter—I am incredibly grateful for this bookish community.Â
Yours,
Tyler
I’m a Brooklyn-based journalist and author. My debut novel Amphibian is forthcoming from Ig on October 22, Virago (UK), and dtv (Germany). My first book, No Way Home: A Memoir of Life on the Run (St. Martin’s Press, 2018) followed my childhood as the daughter of an international pot smuggler and federal fugitive. I’m here and here on Instagram. Get in touch with any bookish events you’d like me to include!
